WHAT IS A BASE SERVICE UNIT ?

Raising a child that has a mental illness creates far more challenges than normal child-rearing. The strain on parents and siblings can appear insurmountable at times. Navigating the maze of the mental health system can be difficult, but it becomes easier as you gain understanding on how "the system" works.

Base Service Units, or BSU's are offices set up within counties in Pennsylvania to help connect appropriate services with individuals in need. Bucks County has three regional Base Service Units (listed below) . Ask your Family Support Specialist or Administrative Case Manager if you are not sure what BSU is nearest to you.

The BSU can help to initiate services such as Case Management, Wrap Around Services (BHRS), Outpatient Therapy, Medication Management, Psychological or Psychiatric Evaluations, Partial Programs, Family-Based Mental Health Services, and more. The Intake Specialist at the BSU can assess what your needs are and help direct you to the right resources. BSU's can help both children and adults. If you are a parent that is in need of mental health services yourself, the BSU can help you find these resources, as well.

If this process seems to daunting, or you are "getting lost in the system" the ACM or FSS at the Buck's County L.I.F.E. Program can help to get started. They can even assist you in making phone calls to begin services.
